My mother loved the farm life, so, when I met my future husband, she hoped we’d get married.
I’m not sure what it was about farm life that my mother loved. She was an avid gardener and spent countless hours working the soil and nurturing her plants. We had horses, and though she wasn’t keen on riding, she was comfortable working around them.
Maybe it was the farm lifestyle that she admired. For instance, Mom believed farmers to be hard workers (they are) and good people (we try). She loved the idea of her grandchildren growing up on a farm. They had the perfect place to grow up. They had fresh air, the freedom to play outside and learn about animals, machinery and plants. She was proud that our kids could tell her what was happening on the farm and what crops we planted in our fields. Although Mom is no longer with us, I think of her when our grandson talks about the farm and how proud she would be that he’s another farmer in the making.
In my contemporary romance novel, Forever Love, https://deboraharmstrong.ca/forever-love/the heroine, Davina, is a farmer. She’s proud of what she does, and the farm life. Although she is a famous author, she calls herself a farmer first. She loves her cows, who she refers to as The Ladies, and she can pitch in to do her share of the work any time she is needed. Davina’s favourite vehicle is her pickup truck. She loves to wear cowboy boots, and jeans are her preferred article of clothing, despite her looking gorgeous in a dress.
Quinn fantasizes about being a farmer’s husband. Davina isn’t sure that he’ll fall in love with the dust, the smells, and the work involved on the farm. However, Quinn believes that because he loves the farm, he’ll love the farm. Only time will tell.

What about you? Do you dream of living on a farm? Does farm life or country living appeal to you? Are you a born and bred city dweller and you have no interest in travelling outside of the city limits?
There’s no right or wrong answer. Besides, think of how crowded we would be if we all lived in the same space?
